Michael Reid spoke at the Writers' Center on April 30th. He brought up many interesting points regarding culture. When he asked the audience what their ideas of culture were, various answers were given. Heritage, Socialization, and even Music were different parts of culture that came to people's minds.
Mr. Reid began by explaining that everybody has different levels of needs. Level 1 is basic needs like eating and sleeping. Level 2 is safety and security, like having a house. Level 3 is to find love and friendship. Level 4 is to know that love and friendship will continue (known as status and esteem). Finally, we have self-actualization that allows for the creation of art.
In Mr. Reid's own definition, culture is the quest of people to meet the needs within the bounds of their physical environments. Water, for example, would have a different importance to an island nation than it would to a desert nation.
One idea that was reinforced was that of "willingness." How willing are people to communicate with one another? We all have to be willing to communicate to learn, agree, and understand other cultures. Each individual is different, however, and this can lead to challenges when facing other people. But it is important to try. So important that it can mean (in the most extreme conditions) survival.
So, if we respect other cultures, people, and individuals, we can actually learn a lot about ourselves. We have to put forth an effort and keep at it in order to succeed in communication. I thought Michael Reid's topic was excellent and enjoyed the discussion. But what about you? Can you tell the blog about a time when you succeeded in cross-cultural communication? How about a time you failed? What do you think would make communication easier? I welcome your ideas and thoughts about culture and communication.

I'm enjoy the man's speech. I agree with his opinion. The most important thing to make the communication easier is keep talking. With talking, you can know each other, know their personality, culture, background and so on.
I have failed many times because I afraid to talk to other people when I came here. I felt nervous.
Li is the first writer??
Where is Dereck?
I enjoyed his speech, too. I can understand easily what he said. Because when he talked about Topic,he spoke sloly and emphasized what his opinion is important in the talking. Well, "what is culture?",I think sometimes the simplest question is the most difficult."Why we learn another culture?",he said."We can learn another way of thinking according to learning another culture" That's good idea and I also agree with him.
Don't you think so?
Even if you didn't see the speech, I hope everyone says something about this topic.
Personally, I agree with what Mr. Reid had to say as well. Dialogue and conversation are important.
I think that students who come to study in America and are learning English as a second, third, fourth, etc... language have to become very brave to use what language skills they have at their disposal. On top of that they have to learn culture, manners, idioms, etc... so that it can be overwhelming.
It is a worthwhile pursuit, however, and I respect anyone who chooses to learn different languages and cultures.
I agree with Michael Reid there have many important things to make communication. also we can learn many different countries culture, background. So I agree with Michael Reid.
I agree with him too because I think that learning other culture makes us recognize our culture.
By the way...
in my experience, I still tend to be afraid of making mistake when I talk with foreign people. I'm easy to feel nervous, so I'm often upset while talking. Then I feel that the communication end in failure...
But I beleive taht time and my experience will solve the problem. I will do my best for the success in cross-cultural communication!
